50 Photos 50 Flowers 50mm Series
~ Starting Friday March 13th 2009 ~ Ended May 6th 2009 ~

This Photo blog is inspired by a trip I took with my sister flowergirl_deb to the Philadelphia Flower Show in early March. I took my Nikon D200 camera and my new Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens. With the lens being so fast and with it’s tight focus area, I had to change my way of shooting. Looking at my photos after the show I wanted to explore this lens much more. I love the dreamy effect of the photos from this lens. I will be shooting one flower a day for the next 50 days. All the photos will be taken with the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens and imported in to Adobe Lightroom, then taken into Adobe Photoshop for cropping. No other Lightroom or Photoshop enhancement is done to any of the photos since my main goal is to learn every thing there is to know about this lens. My goal is to master this lens. This I swear.

Wednesday May 6th 2009 ~ Day 50 of 50 ~ “Going With The Wind”
~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/2000 sec, f/2.2, ISO 200, Cropped.~
Today for my final 50 there is only one thing I wanted to shoot that I never got the chance to. And that would be Puffs. Today I saw a group of Puffs and took the opportunity because I knew that before lone they will be “Going With The Wind”. I shot two set. 2 close up and 2 a bit back. I was not sure which one I like best. So I tried them on a duo layout. When I still could not decide, I keep then both for the last of my 50 Photos 50 Flowers 50mm Series...

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/1250 sec, f/2.2, ISO 400, No Cropping.~
I spent about one hour shooting some roses in the rain, and I was rushing for shelter when I sew this Tulip leaning in my path. Just has I was about to step over it, I stopped and took one shot. It is funny that the flowers I spent all that time on, did not pop like the Tulip. I never even noticed the large tear drop with the reflection of the background Tulip in it, on till now. I am glad that I paused for that brief moment, or I would have missed “Tears In Wind”.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/640 sec, f/2.2, ISO 400, No Cropping.~
The rain was spritzing dew like drops, causing these ice pink Tulips to glow in the glimmering light coming from the window beyond. Although I knew it was not safe to shoot in the rain, I could not resist the temptation. I only too two quick shots before tucking my camera away. Out of the two I like this one for it best represents the dewy pastel, “Softly Glowing” Tulips.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/640 sec, f/2.2, ISO 400, Cropped.~
Not many flower grow on the Camelid Hybrid tree but they are a loud red. I spotted them from across the way. I went over to take a peek of what it is about this scanty bunch. So few and yet so tempting. I only took one shot just to get them out of my mind. It was a shaded spot with many trees casting shadows all over the place. I did not think I would do well there. Has I took the one shot and turn to leave I felt a “Heart Echoes In Scarlet”.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/800 sec, f/2.2, ISO 400, Cropped.~
The advantages of growing Ornamental Onion in the flower garden is that it looks “Fabulously Fuzzy” and it is edible. But this is not why I wanted to shoot it. The reason is, it was the Cherry Blossom Festival at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden today and it was crowded. It was difficult to shoot with out some body in the way. This Ornamental Onion was potted, and placed where there were hardly any traffic, and there the light was good.

The Monk’s Hood Cactus sits more to the outer edges of the desert garden where the light is strongest. For this reason I have not gone to that side much. The yellow flowers came in to bloom so fast that I have not notice it on till today. And only because a young lady was sitting on the ground sketching it that draw my attention to it. Lucky for me today was a cloudy day and I was not bothered by the bright sun light that usually dominate the side.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/1600 sec, f/2.2, ISO 400, Cropped.~
The Witch Alder is one of those shrubs that get attention only because it sits on the out side entrance of the Garden. The flowers are lovely "Spikes Of Whit", spidery and fragrant. But no, this did not capture my attention. Instead, it was the dark green leaves with deep carvings that gives it my undivided attention. I moved in closer to examine its leave and I thought I will give it a shot or two. I took ten shots, may be twelve.

I moved in closer to examine its leave and I thought I will give it a shot or two. I took ten shots, may be twelve. </span></p></div></div></iweb:richTitle>

The Rhododendron are cover by a cluster of larger trees, making that section very shady. But the lack of direct sun light does not stop the Rhododendron from drawing my attention. From a distance I see them “Flourishing In The Shade”.

~Aperture Priority, Gorillapod, Shutter Release, 1/400 sec, f/3.2, ISO 400, Cropped.~
My niece pointed out todays flower. I spent about 1/2 hour in the heat shooting it. I couldn't tell her it's a wild flower and I will have to kill it when I'm done shooting it. I buy Dandelion leaves quite often to juice in my vegetable juice blends. But seeing them in my garden is a nuisance. Although the hot gold flowers are lovely, I still see the Dandelion as a “Hot Healthy Wildness”. Today I gave the Dandelion its glory but come this weekend, I will have to say goodbye.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/250 sec, f/8.0, ISO 400, Cropped.~
This AQUILEGIA COLUMBINE 'Biedermeier' was taken out front this afternoon. I had so much fun shooting the flowers. Funny thing though, the one I shot by accident is the one I like the best. For todays flower I was shooting another flower when I saw this one. And before I knew it, I started shooting not realizing my shadow was in the way. I was lucky I guess, because my shadow provided the right amount of filter to give this flower its details.

The Japanese Flowering Cherry seems to bloom on the shady side of this tree, making it difficult to get a verdant shot. There were other flowers on this tree that I could have shot with a bit more light, but I had time on my hand, and was up for the challenge. For this flower I switched the White Balance from Auto to Shade, and that seems to give this flower the pop it needed.

~Aperture Priority Mode, Hand held 1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 400, Cropped.~
Todays flower was 7 feet tall including the stem. The flower itself was about 18 inches with a deep curve. For this shot I am holding the camera above my head and shooting wildly. Choosing different angles was limited due to the fact that this flower was standing behind a large boulder rock and a fence. But I was determine to photograph this flower because it reminded me of something. And that’s all I’m going to say about that.

Well I think if I have one chance of getting away with laziness, I have used it up on todays flower. Too lazy to set up a tripod and lighting I held the camera in my right hand and my iPhone in the left hand to shoot this photo. I use the iPhone Flashlight App and a slow shutter speed. The light in the next room was on, so I was getting a little bit of light. The iPhone worked has a fill light and picking up more details in the Lily.

Todays flower is a “A Kwanza Cherry Tree” growing in flowergirl_deb’s yard.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/1640 sec, f/2.2, ISO 200, No Flash, No Cropping.~
I like the way the Daffodils ring in the summer every year. But this spring it seems colder than ever and summer may never get here. Still the Daffodils came with its “Gold Of April's Sun” to give me a bit of hope. These Daffodils kept bouncing around because it was so windy this morning. Still I insist on shooting this threesome. Since I knew they won’t be sharp any way I decided to move in for a closer crop. I was but a few inches a way.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/320 sec, f/1.4, ISO 200, No Flash, Cropped.~
“First Sign Of Colour” in my front yard is a delight for me today. This saved me the trouble of going out in the rain and getting on the train to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. I actually don’t remember planting this only one Hyacinth, and it is not the same colour of my neighbors Hyacinths, so I know it didn’t come from her. So I take the credit and I was proud to shoot many shots of my Hyacinth.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/1250 sec, f/3.2, ISO 200, No Flash, Cropped.~
I had already done enough shots for today, and I was walking back towards the front gates of the Garden when all at a sudden I decided to make a detour. First I saw a yellow shrub, and peeping out from behind the yellow I saw a dashing “Pink Calling” me over to it. I thought I would take a quick look then leave. But instead I ended up spending a bit more time shooting this loving Korean Rhododendron.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/1250 sec, f/3.2, ISO 200, No Flash, No Cropping.~
I have had my eyes on these Hyacinths for quite some time now. They finally bloom in fragrance “Blues Amid” the sea of taller plants almost sheltering themselves from view. I soon realized the Hyacinths were further away than I presume. But I was not willing to give up so easily. I took a few shots, some shots were of closer views than this one. But I chose this shot because it shows off a bit more of the background.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/15 sec, f/1.4, ISO 200, No Flash, No Cropping.~
I found an Athurium hiding amid a cluster of leaves with a thin gleam of light shimmering through them. While pushing some leaves aside and with no tripod at such low light I still went ahead and took the shot. This is the third of five shots. I like the on camera crop of this shot. I also think this shot best shows off the tremulous light effect that was coming from the right side.

I have never bother to shoot this close at f/2.2 before because of lack of sharpness. So when I was shooting this Magnolia, it was purely for fun. At the time I was not planing on actually using this shot for anything. So I was not paying close attention to what I was doing. But then I was looking through my images and there is some thing about the camera crop, the horizon gradient effect background, the heart, that made me decided to go with this photo.

I will never completely understand Orchids and their complex flowers and this strange Orchid is a prime example of that. Not only was this Orchid complex in its structure, but also difficult to shoot, mostly because of the angle in which it grows and the little space I had to maneuver. Not to mention all the obstacles that are placed behind it. Today I tried my best to make the obstacles obscure. And also I am big on cropping in camera.

Saturday April 4th 2009 ~ Day 23 of 50 ~ “Sweet Before It's Gone”
~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/400 sec, f/2.0, ISO 200, No Flash, Cropped.~
How to make a window disappear. I have been trying to shoot the Pomegranate for over a week. But it sits on a high step near the glass Inclosure of the green house. So the light hits it from above and on 2 sides. Today I noticed the flowers were dying off. So I thought I better shoot one while it’s still some what “Sweet Before It's Gone”. And of course this came at a cost. I had to give up the back leaves and stems in order to make the window drop out.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/750 sec, f/3.5, ISO 400, No Flash, Cropped.~
Well I have to be very careful what I wish for in the future. I wished for plenty of rain drops on leaves for my shoot today. The rain fell really hard then stopped as I entered the gates of the Garden. Then as if to mock me it waited until I pulled my camera out to start falling again. In the 5 minutes of no rain I was able to get a few shoots off. I guess some things like these berries are “In Need Of The Rain”. Perhaps if they did, they would be more succulent.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/4000 sec, f/1.4, ISO 200, No Flash, No Cropping.~
Tulips sits in waiting all winter just to have such a short life. For this reason I do not grow Tulips. I hate to see such beauty dye so quickly. Tulips in large numbers reminds me of the rainbows I used to see when I was a child, and rainbows look better from afar. And this is the way I looked at Tulips. Today I looked inside a Tulip and was surprised to see such details. I could not stop myself from gazing. Perhaps I was “Seeking The Heart Of A Tulip”.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/45 sec, f/2.5, ISO 400, No Flash, Cropped.~
The Haworthia Coarctata cactus reside in a sink in area and the limbs of it curled like an Octopus around a tree trunk. The first time I saw it I was afraid to venture there. But for April Fool’s I thought I shoot some thing unusual looking. This was in a brightly lit spot, so I used my body to block some of the light. I shot this from directly above and about 10 inches away. It was hard to frame this in the camera, so this was cropped in Photoshop.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/6400 sec, f/3.5, ISO 400, No Flash, No Cropping.~
Today I spent some time shooting tiny flowers with big shadows. Ever since I discovered that when I am standing directly over a subject with my 50mm, I can close in as much as 6 inches without getting any major blur. So in spite of the intense sunlight and lots of shadowing from the leaves of these flowers and nearby trees, I was able to get a vivid images by bringing the camera close to the flowers. And creating a tightly framed images.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is close on Mondays, so todays photo was taken yesterday. the Alocasia Lily is seated at the entrance of the Tropical Paradise. I have often brushed its leaves while entering the doors but I have never notice a Lilly this large. Trying to shoot a Lilly this large with the 50mm while keeping the enter flower in focus call for a f/3.5. This photo was taken from about 24 inches away while trying to blur the background.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/320 sec, f/4.0, ISO 400, No Flash, No Cropping.~
It rained today at the Garden which made it all the more better because everything was drenched in rain drops. The Ancilla Tulip was one of the many flowers that I shot today. It was sort of beaten down by the rain and was leaning slightly to one side. In this photo I tilted my camera to exaggerate the crookedness of the Tulip and to avoid a bit of glare coming from the upper right corner. This photo was shot from about 18 inches away.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/320 sec, f/1.4, ISO 400, No Flash, No Cropping.~
I have to pass this Orchid every day because it drapes the door way like “A Free Spirit”. But the bright light from the sun that hits it prevented me from getting a good photo until today. The rain had just stopped falling, fogging the windows and blocking the sun light. So today I took my chance of getting a good shot. This was taken from about 15 inches a way.

~Aperture Priority, 1/160 sec, f/2.5, ISO 400, No Flash, No Cropping.~
I don’t go in to the tropical rain forest often, due to the fact that my camera lens gets fogged up from the moisture. So today I thought I make a quick run through. I was moving fast when the sweet fragrance of the Gardenia came at me. I have seen this shrub before but had not seen any flowers blooming on it. I had to paused and enjoy it for a moment because I don’t know if I would see another Gardenia again. This was shot from about 12 inches away.

They were always gone before I knew it. I would see the buds, then a few days I would go back and there would be no buds or flowers. So today I was not even paying attention to the Camellias. I had other thing in mind to shoot. May be the Camellias notice my lack of interest the pass few days and decided to get my attention by blooming this one flower. The flower looked nothing like its buds. I was also surprised I was able to shoot it with in 8 inches without a blur.

~Aperture Priority, 1/2000 sec, f/2.0 (.7 steps down), ISO 400, No Flash, No Cropping.~
Before I even entered the desert I heard the ladies giggling. Distracted from what I was about to shoot, I wondered over, as I approached the threesome parted to reveal a blue-Cactus erect in all its glory. I called the threesome back over to use as a shield from the direct light. To my surprised, They were all too eager to help out. With the giggling threesome standing directly in front of me, but a ways off so as not to cast a shadow, I took 4 shots and called it a day.

It was so windy today that nothing would stand still. After spending 1/2 hour with the Pieris Japonica and their resistance to be photographed, I gave up all hopes of getting a photo for today. I was defeated, so I left the battle field with my head bowed and camera dangling at my side. As I pass a cluster of Evergreens I thought why not take a shot. I was standing under the shady trees looking straight up when I saw a bokeh between sky and Evergreens.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/400 sec, f/1.8, ISO 400, No Flash, Cropped.~
They bear like wild shrubs in the Japanese Garden. For two days I have tried to shoot the soft pink draping blossoms of the Pieris Japonica with no luck. So I have settled for the “Fruit Of Pieris Japonica”. In the shade and behind the blossoms, hid the aged capsules. Lucky for me it was a cloudy day, for I had to lean way over without casting a shadow, but blocking what little light there was. From 18 inches away I fired a burst of 6 shots.

They are not labeled, yet in the mixed of earth and grass they break the flow and draw attention to themselves, thusly I named them “Purple Patch”. I have pass here a number of times, they were always asleep but today they look out at me with orange eyes. I isolated this one from the rest for todays shoot. The back petals were shy or perhaps asleep still. I shoot this from about a foot & 1/2 away causing the back petals to blur.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/1600 sec, f/3.5, ISO 400, No Flash, Cropped.~
There is a shaded corner of the Garden where Berries bear on Heavenly-Bamboo. Behind the Bamboo is the fence of the Japanese Garden. It is through this fence that the sun shines its “Smoking Light Beams”. The beams fell in front of and behind of the Berries. So in order to avoid the front beams, I focused on the Berries and in-between two of the front beams. The front beams are the ones that is causing the smoking effect in this photo.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/200 sec, f/3.5, ISO 400, No Flash, Cropped.~
Just when I was getting the hang of rain drops, the sun came out. The outdoors flowers, were drying off from the sun. I found this shrub still wet on the under parts. So I raised one stem up and away from the rest. Since yellow is not a major problem for me, I spend most of this shoot focusing on the one droplet on the lower left flower. A large tree in the background blocked the light and keep the droplet from getting blown out.

When I got to the Garden this morning all the flowers “Were Bowed Down With Tears” of rain. Since the flowers were bent over low to the ground, I decided to shoot from above with the rain running downward. Focusing was difficult. If I were too close the flower would blur, & if I step back too far the rain drops would lose details. In the end I place my focus on the rain drops, move back until most of the flower is in focus, Then took the shot.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/2500 sec, f/3.5, ISO 400, No Flash, No Cropping.~
Today I played with wild things. I stumbled upon a bramble in a shaded area. With not much space to maneuver I decided to practice on how close I can go and still stay in focus. The blossoms of this shrub were very tiny, making it difficult to see when focusing the camera. This stem is about 8 inches, the camera is bout 11 inches away. In order to keep the entire stem some what focus, I focused on the center buds with the camera tilted.

~Aperture Priority Mode, 1/250 sec, f/3.5, ISO 400, With Flash.~
I got to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden late today. The sun was starting to set and the light from the skylight fading fast. Since I had no tripod, I used my flash with a SW-10H Diffusion Dome in the vertical position so as not to create shadows. I tried to shoot a Bird of Paradise, but all I could see from my angle was a butterfly, so I adjusted the camera & took 2 shots of “My Butterfly”, this is the second shot with no cropping needed.

~Manual Mode, 1/6400 sec, f/1.4, ISO 400, No Flash, Tripod, Shutter Remote Release.~
Day 3 photo was taken at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Although I was not allowed a tripod indoors, the security man told me he would not check to see if I was using it or not. So I took that as a go a head. I didn’t want to draw attention to myself by using a flash so a slow shutter speed was in order for this photo. With my tripod in it’s quadru position I took 4 shots. This was the first & to my surprise not even cropping was needed.

Although I was not allowed a tripod indoors, the security man told me he would not check to see if I was using it or not. So I took that as a go a head. I didn&#x2019;t want to draw attention to myself by using a flash so a slow shutter speed was in order for this photo. With my tripod in it&#x2019;s quadru position I took 4 shots. This was the first &amp; to my surprise not even cropping was needed.</p></div></div></iweb:richTitle>

Saturday March 14th 2009 ~ Day 2 of 50 ~ “Sail Close To The Wind”
~Manual Mode, 1/160 sec, f/2.5, ISO 400, No Flash, Tripod, Shutter Remote Release.~
For day 2 photo shoot, I felt I should practice with the color white, since my whites will some times lack details. I use a soft window sunlight for the crisp White Oriental Lilies. Lucky for me there was an over cast today which worked to my benefit. I move the flower close to window to get the full effect of the sun. I didn’t need many shots to figure out the right exposure. Still it was not easy, so I will have to explore the color white again.

Friday March 13th 2009 ~ Day 1 of 50 ~ “Purple Rain Down On Me”
~Manual Mode, 1.6”, f/1.4, ISO 400, No Flash, Tripod, Shutter Remote Release.~
I decided I would start day one of my photo shoot with the color that is the most difficult for me. Purple on my Nikon D200 would always come out blue. It does not matter what lens I use on that camera, the result is always the same. So I thought I’ll face my fears, jump right in and start with the purple Hyacinth flower. I tried different lighting setups, then I finally settle for no lighting at all, just the thick curtain filter window backlighting.
